This year is the 100th celebration of Father's Day in the United States. The first Father's Day was celebrated in 1910.

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd started the tradition of Father's Day in the honor of her dad on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. By 1916, US President Woodrow Wilson approved the idea of observing an annual Father's Day. Then in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made Father's Day a national event

According to tradition, one should wear or display red roses to honor their living fathers, while white roses pay homage to deceased fathers.

Father's Day is the fifth most popular card-sending holiday, with an estimated $100 million in card sales. Husbands, grandfathers, uncles, sons and sons-in-law are honored as well as fathers.

The Dad in your life is not alone- in fact, there are 67.8 million fathers in America according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Father's Day is generally celebrated in most parts of the world. In 52 countries (including the United States), it is recognized on the third Sunday in June. Other areas of the world, such as Sweden and Australia, recognize the holiday on different days.

The National Retail Federation (NRF), a trade association that focuses on the retail industry at large, found in its Father's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey that the average consumer spent $90.59 on Father's Day gifts in 2009.
